Tip 4. Experiment with new media.


Playing with ink and unusual drawing tools will loosen up your hand as well as your imagination. This image was created by drawing a plastic knife through wet printing ink on a sheet of aluminium. I printed it onto paper by rubbing the back of the paper with my fingers. This type of print is known as a monotype.

The picture below is an abstract print made in the same way by one of the students who came to my monotypes workshop.  All the marks were made with the same tool, apart from the white lines, which were made by paper stencils.



Drawing is about so much more than just reproducing what you see in front of you.  It’s about self expression, just like music, dance or poetry.
